The Alpine Grassland of Wind Turbines & Wildflowers
Huitengxile (Huitengxiliang) Grassland, at an elevation of over 2,000 meters, is the highest and one of the most scenic grasslands in Inner Mongolia. Known for its rolling alpine meadows, vast wind-farm turbines, and summer wildflowers, it offers a cooler, less crowded alternative to the more famous Xilamuren.
Huitengxile means 'cool plateau' in Mongolian — an apt name for this high-altitude grassland at 2,000-2,100m. Located in the Ulanqab (Wulanchabu) area, it's about 130 km from Hohhot and 350 km from Beijing. The grassland is famous for its 'wind turbines forest' — one of China's largest wind farms — which creates a distinctive, futuristic landscape against the rolling green hills.
Compared to Xilamuren, Huitengxile offers: (1) Higher elevation with cooler summer temperatures (often 5-8°C cooler than Hohhot); (2) Stunning wildflower displays in June-July; (3) The dramatic wind-turbine landscape; (4) Fewer crowds; (5) Beautiful rolling terrain ideal for photography. It's a favorite among locals and increasingly popular with travelers seeking a more natural grassland experience.
June-August is the prime season. June-July: wildflowers carpet the meadows (the famous 'flower sea'). July-August: warmest weather, greenest grass. September: golden tones and clear skies. The grassland's high elevation means cool nights even in summer — bring a jacket. Winter (November-March) is very cold and the area is largely closed.
From Hohhot: about 2.5-3 hours by car (130 km), via the G110 road and county roads. From Beijing: about 4-5 hours by car via the G6/G7 expressway, or take a high-speed train to Jining (Ulanqab) then a car (about 1 hour). Public transport is limited — a private car, taxi, or organized tour is recommended. The road to the higher meadow areas can be rough; an SUV is preferable in wet conditions.
Top activities: (1) Walk or drive among the giant wind turbines; (2) Wander the wildflower meadows (June-July); (3) Ride a horse across the grassland; (4) Visit a Mongolian yurt camp and taste local dairy products; (5) Watch the sunset over the rolling hills; (6) Stargaze — the high elevation and clear air offer excellent night skies; (7) Visit the nearby Wulanhada volcano park (about 1.5 hours away).
Accommodation is simpler than at Xilamuren: (1) Yurt camps in the grassland (basic to mid-range, with bonfire parties in summer); (2) Hotels in nearby Zhuozi county or in Hohhot (recommended for comfort, with a day trip out); (3) Some new boutique camps have opened. Book in advance in July-August. Most travelers visit as a day trip from Hohhot or stay one night in a yurt.
1. The elevation (2,000m+) may cause mild altitude symptoms — take it easy on arrival. 2. Weather changes fast; bring rain gear and warm layers. 3. The wind can be strong on the exposed plateau — a windproof jacket helps. 4. Roads can be muddy after rain; check conditions. 5. Carry water and snacks — services are limited on the grassland. 6. A guide or tour operator helps with the logistics and local access.
