Essential Advice for Your Grassland Trip

Plan My Trip →

Planning a trip to Inner Mongolia? These practical tips will help you make the most of the grasslands, desert, and nomadic culture — from packing to etiquette.

Best Time to Visit

June to September offers the greenest grasslands and the most activities, including the Naadam festival (July-August). For desert adventures, spring and autumn avoid the summer heat. Winter is beautiful but extremely cold.

What to Pack

Pack layers — grassland weather changes quickly, and nights are cool even in summer. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and insect repellent for summer. In winter, bring heavy down clothing. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for both grassland and desert.

Yurt Stays

Staying in a Mongolian yurt (ger) is a highlight. Expect basic but comfortable accommodation: beds, heating (in winter), and shared or private facilities depending on the camp. Book well in advance during July-August peak season.

Horse Riding

Horseback riding on the grassland is a must. Wear long pants and closed shoes. Follow the herder's instructions — Mongolian horses are sure-footed but spirited. A short training session is usually included before the ride.

Cultural Etiquette

When visiting a herder's home or joining a festival, be respectful: accept offerings with both hands, don't refuse a toast too firmly, and ask before photographing people. The Mongolian welcome ceremony and bonfire party are highlights of the cultural experience.

Getting Around

Public transport between grassland attractions is limited. A private car with a local guide is the most practical way to travel, allowing you to stop at viewpoints, visit herder families, and adjust your pace.

Desert Essentials

If visiting the Kubuqi or Badain Jaran deserts, bring a scarf or mask for the wind, plenty of water, and sunscreen. Camel rides and sandboarding are gentle adventures suitable for most fitness levels.
