Hulunbuir Grassland: The Most Beautiful Grassland in China

The Vast Green Ocean of the North

Plan My Trip →

The Hulunbuir Grassland, in the northeast of Inner Mongolia, is widely regarded as China's most beautiful grassland — a vast green ocean of rolling pasture that stretches to the horizon. Here's your guide.

The Grassland

Hulunbuir is one of the world's great grasslands — over 100,000 square kilometers of rolling pasture, lakes, and rivers in the far northeast of Inner Mongolia. Its endless horizons and pure air make it unforgettable.

The Culture

This is the homeland of the Mongolian nomads — their yurts, horses, and hospitality define the grassland experience. Visitors can stay in a yurt camp, ride horses, and join a Mongolian feast.

The Lakes

The grassland takes its name from two lakes — Hulun Lake and Buir Lake. These freshwater lakes attract birds and wildlife and add to the landscape's beauty.

The Seasons

The grassland is green from June to September, golden in autumn, and snow-covered in winter. Summer (June-August) is the classic season for its colors and the Naadam festival.

How to Visit

Hulunbuir is reached via Hailar (Hulunbuir) Airport or by train from Harbin. Tours typically include yurt stays, horse riding, visits to nomad families, and the local cuisine.

Practical Tips

The grassland is vast — distances are long, so plan your itinerary carefully. Mosquitoes are common in summer; bring repellent. The best time is June to September.
