Inner Mongolia Travel Guide: Festivals, Culture & Practical Advice

Celebrate and Understand the Grassland Way

Plan My Trip →

Inner Mongolia's culture is alive with festivals, music, and traditions that reach back to the time of Genghis Khan. This guide introduces the region's cultural highlights and the practical know-how for a smooth visit.

The Naadam Festival

Naadam, held in July-August, is Mongolia's greatest festival — a celebration of the 'three manly games': horse racing, wrestling, and archery. In Inner Mongolia, Naadam events take place across the region, with Hohhot and the major grassland resorts hosting the most accessible celebrations.

Mongolian Music & Dance

The haunting sound of the morin khuur (horse-head fiddle) and the extraordinary art of khoomei (throat singing) are integral to Mongolian culture. Many grassland resorts feature evening performances, and Hohhot has venues showcasing traditional music.

Customs & Etiquette

When visiting a herder's home, remove your shoes, accept offerings with both hands, and avoid refusing a proffered cup of tea or a toast. Photography of people requires permission. The hada (ceremonial scarf) is a sign of respect — accept it graciously.

Practical Travel Advice

Grassland travel requires planning: private car with a guide is essential for the remote areas, and accommodation (yurts) should be booked in advance in summer. Pack for temperature swings and bring insect repellent. The best months are June-September.

Language & Currency

Mandarin is widely spoken; Mongolian is the native language of the herders. Mobile payment is standard in cities but carry cash for rural areas. Tipping is not expected but appreciated for good service.

Combining Culture & Scenery

For the fullest experience, combine a cultural visit (a festival or performance), a yurt stay on the grassland, and a desert adventure. A well-designed itinerary lets you experience the region's traditions and landscapes in one rewarding trip.
