Beijing Travel Guide: Top Attractions & Must-Sees

The Capital's Essential Sights

Plan My Trip →

Beijing is a city where 3,000 years of history meet the modern Chinese capital. For first-time visitors, its iconic sights are unmissable. This guide covers Beijing's top attractions and how to see them at their best.

The Forbidden City

The world's largest palace complex, home to 24 Ming and Qing emperors. Allow half a day to walk its 72 hectares of halls, courtyards, and gardens. Enter through the Meridian Gate and exit from the north, near Jingshan Park for the classic panorama. Book tickets online in advance.

The Great Wall

Beijing is the base for visiting the Great Wall. Badaling is the most popular (and crowded); Mutianyu offers beautiful scenery with fewer crowds; Jinshanling and Simatai are more remote and dramatic. A private tour can arrange the best section for your fitness and interests.

The Temple of Heaven

This Ming-dynasty complex is where emperors prayed for good harvests. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests — the iconic blue-roofed pavilion — is the highlight. Visit in the morning to see locals practicing tai chi, singing, and dancing in the surrounding park.

The Summer Palace

The imperial retreat on Kunming Lake, with its Long Corridor and Marble Boat, offers a relaxed half-day. Take a boat across the lake and climb Longevity Hill for views over the water. It's at its loveliest in spring and autumn.

The Hutongs

Beijing's traditional alleyways reveal the old city's everyday life. Take a rickshaw tour, visit a courtyard home (siheyuan), and see the drum and bell towers. The Shichahai area and Nanluoguxiang are the most accessible.

Planning Your Sightseeing

The top sights are spread out — plan 3-4 days for the essentials. Many sights close on Mondays (museums) or have restricted entry days. Book major attractions online in advance, and consider a guided tour to save time and add context.
