Xidan Commercial District: A Shopping Guide

The Vibrant Retail Heart of Beijing

Plan My Trip →

Xidan is one of Beijing's most famous shopping districts — a lively area of department stores, malls, and specialty shops that has served the capital's shoppers for decades. Here's your guide.

The District Overview

Xidan, in central Beijing just west of the Forbidden City, has been a shopping destination for over a century. Today it's a pedestrian-friendly area of large department stores, shopping malls, and bustling streets.

The Department Stores

The district is anchored by several major department stores, including the famous Xidan Department Store and Beijing Books Building — one of China's largest bookshops. These offer everything from clothing to electronics.

The Malls & Streets

Modern malls like the Joy City (Xidan) and the surrounding shopping streets offer fashion, dining, and entertainment. The area is especially lively in the evenings and on weekends.

What to Buy

Xidan offers a broad range: fashion and accessories, electronics, books, cosmetics, and local specialties. Prices range from mid-range to upscale, with good sales during the major shopping festivals.

Getting There

Xidan is served by Xidan station on metro Lines 1 and 4 — one of the most convenient shopping districts in Beijing. It's within walking distance of Tiananmen and the Forbidden City.

Practical Tips

Open daily, typically 10:00-22:00. Bargaining is not usual in the department stores (fixed prices). Combine a visit with the nearby National Museum or a stroll through the surrounding streets.
