A Miraculous Spring in the Desert — Yueya Quan
Crescent Lake (Yueya Quan), nestled at the foot of the Singing Sand Dunes in Dunhuang, is a natural spring that has existed for over 2,000 years without being buried by sand. Its distinctive crescent shape, clear turquoise water, and surrounding towering dunes make it one of the most iconic desert landscapes in China.
Crescent Lake is located 5 km south of Dunhuang city, within the Mingsha Shan (Singing Sand Dunes) scenic area. The lake is approximately 100 meters long and 25 meters wide, with a depth of 1-2 meters. For centuries, it has survived despite being surrounded by shifting sand dunes, thanks to its unique geological location and underground water supply. A traditional Chinese pavilion stands beside the lake, adding to its picturesque charm.
The Singing Sand Dunes (Mingsha Shan) surround Crescent Lake and are an attraction in their own right. The dunes reach heights of 100-200 meters and emit a humming or singing sound when the wind blows or when people slide down. Activities include camel riding (100 RMB per person), sand sliding (15 RMB), dune buggy rides, and ATV tours. Climbing the dunes for sunset is a must-do experience.
The best time is from May to October. Sunrise (06:00-07:00 in summer) and sunset (20:00-21:00 in summer) offer the most spectacular lighting and coolest temperatures. Avoid midday in summer when the sand can reach 60°C. April-May and September-October provide the most comfortable weather for hiking the dunes.

Camel ride: 100 RMB (40 min loop). Sand sliding: 15 RMB. Dune buggy: 150-300 RMB depending on route. Opening hours: 05:00-21:00 (summer), 07:00-19:00 (winter).

Crescent Lake has been a landmark on the Silk Road for over 2,000 years. It was an important water source for caravans traveling between China and Central Asia. Legend has it that the lake was formed by a drop of water from a Buddha's vase, ensuring it would never dry up. In recent decades, the lake's water level dropped due to over-extraction of groundwater, but restoration efforts have stabilized it.
Crescent Lake is just 5 km from Dunhuang city center. Combine with: Mogao Caves (25 km southeast, visit in the morning), Dunhuang Museum (free), Shazhou Night Market (for local food and souvenirs), and the Dunhuang Gala show (evening performance). Most Dunhuang itineraries include Crescent Lake as a half-day activity, typically at sunset.
