Located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor, Dunhuang served as the last major Chinese city before travelers ventured into the Taklamakan Desert on the Silk Road. 1. Mogao Caves (UNESCO World Heritage): 735 caves with 45,000 sq m of murals and 2,000+ painted sculptures, dating from the 4th to 14th centuries. 2. Singing Sand Dunes (Mingsha Shan): Towering sand dunes that emit a humming sound when the wind blows. 3. Crescent Lake (Yueya Quan): A natural spring in the shape of a crescent, nestled between the dunes. 4. Yumenguan (Jade Gate Pass): Ancient Silk Road frontier pass. 5. Yangguan Pass: Another historic frontier pass made famous by Chinese poetry.
The best time to visit Dunhuang is from May to October. Peak season is July-August (warm weather, but crowded). September-October offers pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and fewer crowds. April-May and October are ideal for photography with soft golden light. Winter (November-March) is cold but offers a unique, quiet desert experience with lower prices.
Standard ticket: 238 RMB (includes 8 caves, digital center, shuttle bus). Must book in advance online (limited to 6,000 tickets/day in peak season). Emergency ticket: 100 RMB (4 caves, available same-day if not sold out). The digital center shows two documentary films before the cave visit. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the caves.
By air: Dunhuang Mogao International Airport (DNH) has flights to/from Xi'an, Lanzhou, Urumqi, and Beijing (seasonal). By train: Dunhuang Railway Station connects to Lanzhou, Xi'an, and Urumqi (~12-16 hours from Xi'an). By road: Dunhuang is on the G30 Lianhuo Expressway. Local transport: taxis, shared rides, and organized tours are the most convenient ways to reach attractions.
The 'Dunhuang Gala' (又见敦煌) is a 90-minute immersive theatrical performance that brings Silk Road history to life. Tickets range from 298-598 RMB. Shows are held nightly at 20:00 (and additional shows in peak season). Book in advance as it often sells out.
Day 1: Arrive in Dunhuang, visit Mogao Caves in the afternoon, watch Dunhuang Gala in the evening. Day 2: Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Lake (sunrise or sunset), visit Dunhuang Museum. Day 3: Yumenguan Pass, Yadan National Geologic Park (devil's city), return to Dunhuang. Day 4: Yangguan Pass, departure.
