The 'First Pass Under Heaven' — Western End of the Great Wall
Jiayuguan, located in the middle of the Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, is home to the western terminus of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. The Jiayuguan Fort, known as 'the First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven,' is a magnificent military fortress that once guarded the Silk Road. Today, it is a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and Great Wall admirers.
Jiayuguan was built in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty and served as the western gateway to China. The fort is strategically located between two mountains, controlling the narrowest point of the Hexi Corridor. It was here that Silk Road traders passed through customs, and where Chinese civilization ended and the 'Western Regions' began. The city today is a modern industrial town, but its historic sites are remarkably well-preserved.
1. Jiayuguan Fort (Jiayuguan Pass): The main attraction, a massive fortress with walls, towers, temples, and a museum. Allow 2-3 hours. 2. Overhanging Great Wall (Xuanbi Great Wall): A steep section of the Great Wall that appears to hang from the mountain ridge. Great for hiking and photos. 3. First Beacon Tower (Dun Yi): The westernmost beacon tower of the Ming Great Wall, located near the river. 4. Great Wall Museum: Comprehensive exhibits on the Great Wall's history. 5. Wei-Jin Tombs: Underground fresco tombs from the 3rd-5th centuries.
May to October is ideal, with comfortable temperatures. May-June and September-October offer the best weather for outdoor activities. July-August can be hot (35°C+) but is peak tourist season. April and October offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Winter is cold but the snow-dusted Great Wall is spectacular.

By air: Jiayuguan Jiuquan Airport (JGN) has flights to/from Xi'an, Lanzhou, and Chengdu. By train: Jiayuguan South Railway Station (high-speed) connects to Lanzhou (4h), Xi'an (8h), and Urumqi (7h). Jiayuguan Station (regular) has more routes. By road: On G30 Expressway, 220 km from Dunhuang, 650 km from Lanzhou. Local transport: taxis and buses connect the attractions; a half-day tour is the most efficient way to see all three Great Wall sites.
Half-day: Jiayuguan Fort (2h) + Overhanging Great Wall (1.5h) + First Beacon Tower (30 min). Full-day: Add Wei-Jin Tombs and Great Wall Museum. Jiayuguan is often a stop on the Silk Road route between Dunhuang (220 km west) and Zhangye (260 km east), so most travelers visit as part of a longer Gansu itinerary.
The fort looks best in early morning or late afternoon golden light. The Overhanging Great Wall offers dramatic angles with the Gobi Desert backdrop. Climb to the highest tower of the fort for panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. Wide-angle lenses are recommended for the vast landscapes.
