Guilin's food streets are legendary — from the famous Guilin rice noodles to river fish, local snacks, and the sweets of Guangxi. Here's where and what to eat in the river city.
Guilin rice noodles (mifen) are the city's culinary icon — silky rice noodles in a rich meat broth, topped with pickled vegetables, peanuts, and chili. Try them at any dedicated noodle shop, best in the morning.
Guilin's food streets cluster near the city center — Zhengyang Street, the riverside alleys, and the streets around Central Square. Evening brings the food stalls to life.
Don't miss river fish (cooked with beer — the famous beer fish), stuffed river snails, bamboo rice, and the Three Treasures of Guilin.
The night markets are where Guilin comes alive for food — grilled skewers, hot pot, dumplings, and sweet desserts. Come hungry and eat as the locals do.
Several restaurants along the Li River offer dining with views of the karst peaks — especially lovely in the evening when the mountains are lit.
Spicy is the default in Guilin — ask for 'not spicy' (bula) if you prefer mild. Most food streets are best from late afternoon to late evening. Wash everything down with local tea or Sanhua wine.
