Chaka Salt Lake is approximately 300 km west of Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province. Options include: (1) Train from Xining to Chaka Station (direct tourist train available in summer, ~4 hours); (2) Long-distance bus from Xining ( ~5 hours); (3) Private car or organized tour (most flexible, ~3.5 hours). Many travelers combine Chaka Salt Lake with Qinghai Lake in a 2-3 day itinerary.
For the best mirror reflections: visit on a calm, windless day; wear bright-colored clothing (red, orange) for contrast; use a wide-angle lens; get low to the water surface; shoot during golden hour (sunrise/sunset); bring waterproof shoe covers to walk onto the salt flats. The abandoned railway tracks and salt statues also make great subjects.
