Ta'er Monastery — Jewel of Tibetan Buddhism in Qinghai
Kumbum Monastery, also known as Ta'er Monastery, is one of the six great Gelugpa monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism and the most important Buddhist site in Qinghai Province. Located just 25 km from Xining, it is famous for its three artistic treasures — butter sculptures, murals, and embossed embroidery — and for being the birthplace of the great reformer Tsongkhapa.
Kumbum (meaning '10,000 images of the Buddha' in Tibetan) was founded in 1379 on the site where the great master Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) school, was born. The monastery grew over centuries into a vast complex of halls, stupas, and monks' quarters housing up to 3,600 monks at its peak. Today it remains one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Tibetan Buddhist world, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike.
Kumbum is renowned for three unique art forms: (1) Butter Sculptures (Butter Flowers) — intricate figures and scenes sculpted from colored yak butter, replaced fresh each year during the Lantern Festival; (2) Murals — vivid wall paintings using mineral pigments depicting Buddhist deities and stories; (3) Yarkhos (embossed embroidery) — a distinctive appliqué embroidery style using silk and gold thread. These 'Three Wonders' are on display throughout the main halls.
Visit year-round, but the highlight is the Butter Sculpture Festival on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month (usually February), when hundreds of butter sculptures are displayed overnight. Other major festivals include the Monlam (Great Prayer) Festival in the 1st month and the Great Prayer ceremonies in summer. For comfortable weather, May-September is ideal. Morning visits (before 10 AM) are quieter and have better light.
Admission: 80 RMB (peak season), 40 RMB (off-season). Opening hours: 08:00-17:00 daily. The monastery is large — allow 3-4 hours to explore the main halls. An audio guide or a knowledgeable guide is highly recommended to understand the symbolism of the art. Photography is allowed in courtyards but prohibited inside most halls.
Kumbum is 25 km southwest of Xining. Options: (1) Taxi or ride-hailing from Xining (~40 minutes, about 80-100 RMB); (2) City bus route 909 from Xining center (about 1 hour); (3) Private tour including other Xining sights — the most convenient and recommended option. Many travelers combine Kumbum with a visit to Qinghai Lake in a full-day excursion from Xining.
Key highlights: the Grand Hall of the Great Golden Tile Roof, the Small Golden Tile Hall, the Tsongkhapa Stupa (where the master was born), the Great Scripture Hall with its towering Buddha statues, the Eight White Stupas at the entrance, and the Sutra Printing House. Climb to the upper terraces for panoramic views over the surrounding village and valley.

Bargaining for souvenirs at the monastery gate is possible but be respectful. 5. The monastery village has simple restaurants serving Tibetan food — try butter tea and tsampa. 6. Be prepared for the altitude (2,700m) — take it easy if you've just arrived in Xining.
