Qinghai Travel Guide

Land of Blue Lakes, Tibetan Monasteries, and Endless Grasslands

Qinghai Province, located in western China on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is a land of extraordinary natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. From the vast azure waters of Qinghai Lake to the surreal salt flats of Chaka, from ancient Tibetan monasteries to the source of the Yellow River, Qinghai offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path China experience.

Overview

Qinghai is China's fourth-largest province, with an average elevation of over 3,000 meters. It is home to China's largest inland saltwater lake (Qinghai Lake), the source of the Yellow, Yangtze, and Mekong rivers, and significant Tibetan, Hui, and Mongolian populations. Despite its natural wonders, Qinghai remains one of China's least-visited provinces, making it ideal for travelers seeking authenticity.

Top Destinations

1. Qinghai Lake (Koko Nor): China's largest lake, famous for its vivid blue waters and surrounding grasslands. Best visited July-August when rapeseed flowers bloom. 2. Chaka Salt Lake: The 'Sky Mirror' with perfect reflections. 3. Ta'er Monastery (Kumbum): One of the six great Gelugpa monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism. 4. Qilian Mountains: Alpine meadows, snow peaks, and nomadic culture. 5. Hoh Xil: Remote wilderness, home to Tibetan antelopes. 6. Guide National Geopark: Colorful Danxia landforms.

Best Time to Visit

June to September is the best time, with mild temperatures (15-25°C) and blooming wildflowers. July-August is peak season for Qinghai Lake's rapeseed flowers. May and October offer fewer crowds and dramatic landscapes. Winter (November-April) is cold but offers frozen lake scenery and cultural festivals like Tibetan New Year (Losar).

Transportation

By air: Xining Caojiabao International Airport (XNN) connects to major Chinese cities. By train: Xining is on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, with trains to/from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Lhasa. By road: Extensive highway network connects Xining to Qinghai Lake (150 km), Chaka (300 km), and other destinations. Self-driving or joining an organized tour is recommended for flexibility.

Altitude & Health

Most of Qinghai sits above 3,000 meters, so altitude sickness is a concern. Xining (2,275m) is a good starting point for acclimatization. Qinghai Lake is at 3,200m, and areas like Hoh Xil exceed 4,500m. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol the first few days, and consider altitude medication if traveling to high areas.

Cultural Experiences

Visit Tibetan monasteries (Ta'er, Longwu), experience nomadic life in grassland areas, try local cuisine (hand-grabbed lamb, yak butter tea, qingke barley wine), and attend cultural festivals like the Ta'er Monastery Butter Sculpture Festival (15th day of the 1st lunar month) and the Qinghai Lake Cycling Race (July).

Recommended Tours

Popular Qinghai tours include: 3-day Xining-Qinghai Lake-Chaka Salt Lake; 5-day Qinghai-Gansu Silk Road loop; 7-day Qinghai-Tibet overland; and photography-focused tours covering Qilian Mountains and Hoh Xil. China Wonder Tours offers both small group and private customizable itineraries.
