Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla or the dedicated 'Everest View' flights fly east along the Himalaya, passing Mount Everest, Lhotse, and the great peaks of the range. On a clear morning, the views are among the most spectacular on Earth.
Several airlines offer dedicated mountain flights from Kathmandu that don't land — they fly along the range, circle for views of Everest, and return to Kathmandu in about an hour. Seats on the left side (outbound) have the best views.
The best views are in the early morning (October-April offers the clearest skies; May-September brings monsoon clouds). Book the first flight of the day and be flexible — flights are frequently delayed or canceled by weather.
Flying over Everest gives you the panorama from above, but you don't touch the mountain. Driving to Everest Base Camp (Tibet side) or trekking (Nepal side) puts you at its foot. Many travelers combine both for the complete experience.
If you're in Tibet, you can drive to the North Base Camp at 5,200m — the easiest way to stand beneath Everest's north face. The approach passes Rongbuk Monastery, and sunrise on the summit is unforgettable.
