Tibet Travel Guide: Practical Travel Tips

What You Need to Know Before You Go

Plan My Trip →

Traveling to Tibet requires preparation — from permits and altitude management to packing and connectivity. This practical guide covers everything you need to know before your journey to the roof of the world.

Permits & Paperwork

Foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit, arranged through a licensed tour operator. Additional permits are needed for Everest, Ali, and other regions. You must travel with an organized tour or licensed guide. Apply well in advance.

Altitude & Health

Tibet's altitude is the biggest factor. Lhasa is at 3,650m and many sights exceed 4,500m. Acclimatize gradually, hydrate, avoid alcohol, and know the symptoms of altitude sickness. Travel insurance covering altitude is essential.

Packing for Tibet

Pack layers for the big temperature swings, strong sun protection (SPF 50+, sunglasses, lip balm), comfortable shoes, and a warm jacket even in summer. Bring personal medications and any snacks you need — supplies are limited in rural areas.

Money & Payment

Mobile payment (WeChat Pay, Alipay) is widely used, but carry cash for rural areas and small businesses. ATMs exist in towns but can be unreliable. Small denomination notes are useful for donations at monasteries.

Internet & Connectivity

Internet access in Tibet is restricted — many Western sites and apps (Google, Facebook, etc.) are blocked, and VPNs may not work reliably. A hotel or travel agency can advise on what's accessible. Mobile data is available in towns.

Planning Your Trip

A first visit needs 7-12 days. Travel in May-October for the best weather. Book through a reputable local operator who handles permits, guides, transport, and the cultural logistics. Start planning 2-3 months ahead.
