Spring is pleasant — mild temperatures, blossoming trees, and clear days. It's a lovely time for the city's teahouses and the panda base.
Summer is warm and humid with frequent rain, but not as hot as much of China. It's a good time for the mountain escapes around Chengdu and for the city's famous hot pot (which is, remarkably, a summer favorite).
Autumn is the best season — comfortable, dry, and clear. The countryside around Chengdu is golden, and the mountain areas to the west are at their finest.
Winter is cool and cloudy but not severely cold. The city is quiet, the hot pot is at its most welcome, and the nearby mountains offer winter scenery.
The panda base is wonderful year-round, though the pandas are most active in the cooler mornings. Autumn and spring offer the most pleasant visiting conditions.
For the best all-round experience, aim for April-May or September-October. Bring an umbrella — Chengdu is famously cloudy and rainy. Try the hot pot in any season.
