At 4,600 square kilometers and 3,200 meters above sea level, Qinghai Lake ('Koko Nor' in Mongolian) sits on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. Its color shifts from deep blue to turquoise with the light, framed by golden grasslands and distant snow peaks.
The classic way to experience the lake is the 360-kilometer road loop, which passes villages, monasteries, and viewpoints. By bike (the International Qinghai Lake Cycling Race is held here) or by car, the loop offers ever-changing views of the water and sky.
The Bird Islands on the western shore host thousands of migratory birds each spring — gulls, cormorants, and bar-headed geese. The surrounding grasslands are home to yaks, sheep, and wild Tibetan antelope. Wildlife viewing is excellent in the early morning.
The lake is sacred to both Tibetan Buddhists and Mongolian shamanists. Prayer flags, stupas, and mani stones dot the shore, and pilgrims circle the lake clockwise — a journey of about 360 kilometers on foot or by prostrations. Visitors should treat these sites with respect.
June to September offers the best weather, with July-August bringing the famous rapeseed flower fields that turn the shores golden. Spring (May-June) is the season for bird migration. Winter freezes the lake's edges and offers a stark, silent beauty.
Qinghai Lake is about 150 kilometers west of Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province. Most visitors reach Xining by flight or high-speed train from other major cities, then tour the lake by private car over 2-3 days.
