Hiking in China: Dangling Village, Sichuan

Trek to the Clifftop Villages of the Upper Dadu River

Plan My Trip →

Dangling Village (Diaojiaozhai), perched on a cliff above the Dadu River gorge in western Sichuan, is a hidden gem for adventurous hikers. This remote Tibetan village, reachable only on foot along a dizzying cliff path, offers one of the most dramatic hiking experiences in China.

What Is Dangling Village?

The village clings to a sheer cliff face above the roaring Dadu River, at an elevation around 2,600m. For centuries its inhabitants lived in relative isolation, reached only by a narrow path carved into the rock. The name literally means 'hanging village.' Today it offers an authentic glimpse into a disappearing way of life.

The Hiking Experience

The hike from the nearest road involves a cliff path with some exposed sections and breathtaking views of the gorge below. The reward is the village itself: traditional stone-and-wood houses, terraced fields, and warm Tibetan hospitality. The trek is moderate but requires a head for heights and good fitness.

How to Get There

Dangling Village is located near the border of Sichuan's Ganzi Prefecture, in the upper Dadu River valley. Most hikers reach the trailhead from Kangding or Luding by private car (3-4 hours). From the parking area, the hike takes 2-4 hours depending on pace and the route taken.

Best Time to Hike

The best hiking seasons are spring (April-June) and autumn (September-November) when weather is stable and views are clear. Summer brings rain and mud; winter can bring snow and ice on the cliff path. Always check local conditions before setting out.

What to Bring

Bring sturdy hiking boots, trekking poles, plenty of water, and snacks. The village has simple guesthouses where you can stay overnight, but facilities are basic — carry your own toiletries and a sleeping bag liner if you are particular.

Why Go with a Guide

The cliff paths are unmarked in places and can be hazardous in wet weather. A local guide knows the safe routes, can arrange overnight stays, and provides cultural insight into the village's Tibetan traditions. For safety and a richer experience, an organized trek is strongly recommended.
