The Four Sisters of Western Sichuan
Plan My Trip →The Siguniang Mountains (Four Sisters) in western Sichuan offer some of China's most accessible high-altitude adventure. From gentle valley hikes to the 5,025-meter Dafeng summit, here's your complete guide to hiking and climbing in this alpine wonderland.
The Siguniang ('Four Sisters') Mountains rise around Rilong town in Xiaojin County, western Sichuan. The four peaks — Dafeng (Big), Erfeng (Second), Sanfeng (Third), and Yaomei (the highest at 6,250m, also called the 'Queen of Sichuan') — form one of China's most beautiful mountain groups.
Dafeng at 5,025 meters is the easiest of the four peaks to climb — a challenging but non-technical high-altitude trek. With proper acclimatization, a mountain guide, and good fitness, it's achievable for most trekkers. The reward is a sweeping panorama of the entire range.
For non-climbers, the valleys offer beautiful day treks: Changping Valley leads toward the base of the peaks with views of the east faces, while Haizigou (Sea of the Child) Valley features alpine lakes and flower meadows. The Shuangqiao Valley is accessible by shuttle bus.
June to October offers the best weather, with July-August bringing wildflowers in the valleys. Autumn (September-October) provides the clearest mountain views. Winter climbing requires advanced skills and equipment; spring has variable weather.
Rilong sits at 3,200 meters. Spend a night there to acclimatize before higher excursions. The Dafeng climb reaches over 5,000 meters — build aerobic fitness beforehand and be prepared for the effects of altitude. A professional guide and oxygen support are strongly recommended.
The Siguniang area requires climbing permits for the peaks and a local guide is mandatory for summit attempts. A trekking operator arranges permits, porters, camping gear, and transport from Chengdu (about 4-5 hours drive).
