The Duku Highway (Dushanzi-Kuqa) runs north-south across the Tianshan, connecting the grasslands of the north with the oases of the south. It's renowned as one of China's most scenic roads.
The road passes alpine meadows, deep gorges, snow peaks, and the dramatic canyons of the southern slopes — a complete cross-section of the Tianshan's landscapes.
The highway crosses high passes that are closed by snow for much of the year, opening only from late spring to autumn. The summit views are unforgettable.
The drive takes a full day with stops — viewpoints, meadows, and the occasional herder's camp. It's best done with a driver who knows the road.
The highway is open roughly from June to October. June-July offers green meadows and flowers; September brings golden colors.
