Guozigou Bridge, Xinjiang

A Modern Engineering Marvel in the Tianshan

Plan My Trip →

The Guozigou Bridge is one of China's most spectacular cable-stayed bridges, soaring above the Guozigou ('Fruit Valley') gorge in the northern Tianshan Mountains of Xinjiang. Crossing it is a highlight of any journey between Urumqi, Sayram Lake, and the Yili Valley.

About the Bridge

Opened in 2011, the Guozigou Bridge carries the G30 Lianhuo Expressway across the Guozigou Valley. At 700 meters long with piers rising up to 200 meters, it is one of the highest cable-stayed bridges in the world, dramatically set amid the forested slopes of the Tianshan.

Why It's Famous

The bridge's S-curve alignment, towering pylons, and the stunning valley setting have made it a photography icon. Drivers and passengers are treated to a sweeping panorama of snow peaks, green ravines, and the bridge's elegant arcs as they descend through the gorge.

Location & Access

The bridge lies on the expressway between Urumqi and the Yili region, about 150km west of the Sayram Lake exit. Most travelers cross it en route to Sayram Lake, Huocheng, or the Yili Valley. There is a designated viewing platform where you can stop for photos.

Best Time to Visit

The bridge and valley are beautiful year-round. In summer, the slopes are lush green; in autumn, golden forests frame the structure; in winter, snow dusts the peaks. Clear mornings and late afternoons offer the best light for photography.

Combining with Nearby Attractions

The Guozigou Bridge is usually combined with a visit to Sayram Lake — one of Xinjiang's most beautiful alpine lakes — and the Yili Valley's grasslands. A private car tour allows you to stop at the viewpoints and pace your journey.

Travel Tips

The expressway is well-maintained and the crossing takes about 10 minutes. Allow time for photo stops. If you plan to also visit Sayram Lake and the Karajun grassland, a 3-5 day Yili itinerary is ideal.
