The Most Beautiful Grassland in China
Plan My Trip →The Kalajun (Karajun) grassland in Xinjiang's Ili Valley is often called the most beautiful grassland in China — a rolling sea of flower-covered meadows beneath the Tianshan snow peaks. This guide helps you plan your visit to this natural wonder.
Kalajun's appeal lies in its combination of vast rolling meadows, seas of wildflowers (in summer), primeval spruce forests, and the dramatic backdrop of the Tianshan range. It feels wild and untamed — a world away from the crowded tourist grasslands.
From late May through July, the meadows bloom in waves of color — first wild peonies, then bluebells, then golden and purple flowers. July is the peak of the 'flower sea' season and the best time for photography.
Kalajun is a trekking paradise. Multi-day treks cross the meadows to alpine lakes and viewpoints, with camping in yurt villages. Horse riding with Kazakh herders is a wonderful way to explore the higher reaches.
Stay overnight in a Kazakh yurt camp to experience the herding life. Expect warm hospitality, hearty meals of meat and dairy, and the chance to see the herders' daily routines. Nights are cold even in summer — pack warm layers.
Kalajun is in the Ili Valley, about 4 hours' drive from Yining city. Most visitors fly to Yining, then take a private car to the grassland. The nearby Narat grassland is a popular companion destination.
A 2-3 day visit is ideal: one day to reach and explore, one for a trek or horse ride, and time to enjoy the views. Combine Kalajun with Sayram Lake and the Guozigou Bridge for a complete Ili Valley itinerary. Summer (June-August) is the best season.
