Tianshan Grand Canyon: A Visitor's Guide

The Red Rock Wonders of the Tianshan

Plan My Trip →

The Tianshan Grand Canyon (Kuche Grand Canyon), near Kuqa in Xinjiang, is a stunning red-rock gorge carved by water and wind over millennia. Its towering walls and sculpted forms make it one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Tianshan range.

About the Canyon

The Tianshan Grand Canyon stretches about 5 kilometers through red sandstone cliffs, with walls rising over 100 meters. The rock formations — arches, spires, and wave-like curves — are the result of millions of years of erosion, painted in shades of red, orange, and ochre.

Location & Access

The canyon lies about 70 kilometers north of Kuqa city, in the northern part of the Taklamakan basin where the Tianshan rises. It's accessible by road, and is usually visited as part of a Kuqa or Duku Highway itinerary.

Walking the Canyon

A walking path leads into the canyon, passing the most spectacular formations. The narrowest sections are dramatic, and the play of light on the red walls changes constantly. Allow 2-3 hours for the main route.

The Duku Highway Connection

The canyon is a highlight of the Duku (Dushanzi-Kuqa) Highway — one of China's most scenic mountain roads. Many travelers combine the canyon with the highway's lakes, grasslands, and passes in a multi-day drive.

Best Time to Visit

The canyon is open year-round, but spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer the most comfortable temperatures and the best light for photography. Summer can be very hot in the basin below.

Practical Tips

Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky path, carry water, and protect against the sun. The canyon floor can be cool and shaded while the rim is hot — dress in layers. A local guide or organized tour is recommended for the full experience and the wider Kuqa region.
