The Meili Snow Mountain range, known as Kawa Karpo ('White Snow Mountain' in Tibetan), consists of 13 peaks, the highest of which — Kawa Karpo at 6,740m — has never been climbed. It is one of the eight great sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism. The best views are from Feilaisi viewpoint, where at sunrise (especially in winter) the peaks glow gold — a sight Tibetans call 'the golden crown.' The mountain is visible for much of the year but is most dramatic from November to April.

The best time to see Meili Snow Mountain is November to April, when the sky is clearest and the 'golden crown' sunrise is most frequently visible. May-June brings rhododendron blooms and occasional cloud. July-October is the rainy season — the peaks are often hidden, though mornings can still be clear. Winter (December-February) offers the most reliable views but cold temperatures (0-10°C). The Kawa Karpo festival in the 15th day of the 6th lunar month is a special cultural experience.
Meili Snow Mountain is best reached from Shangrila (Zhongdian), which has an airport with flights from Kunming and other cities. From Shangrila, drive to Feilaisi (~3-4 hours) through dramatic mountain scenery. Feilaisi is the classic viewpoint village with hotels facing the peaks. From Lijiang, it's a full-day drive (about 6-7 hours). Most travelers include Meili in a Shangrila or northwest Yunnan loop.

For the legendary 'golden crown' shot: arrive at Feilaisi viewpoint 30-45 minutes before sunrise (sunrise is 06:30-07:30 in winter, 07:00-08:00 in summer). Use a telephoto lens (200mm+) to compress the peaks. Bring a tripod and warm gloves. The best months for clear skies are November-April. The peaks are also stunning under the full moon and at dusk. Don't forget spare batteries — cold drains them fast.
1. Altitude: Feilaisi is at 3,400m — acclimatize in Shangrila (3,300m) first. 2. Book Feilaisi hotels well ahead in peak season (Nov-Apr) — rooms facing the peaks sell out. 3. Dress in warm layers; it can be below freezing at sunrise. 4. Respect local customs — Meili is sacred; don't make loud noise at viewpoints. 5. If Yubeng trekking, hire a porter or horse for luggage. 6. Travel insurance covering high-altitude activity is essential.
