Yunnan Hiking Tours & Trails

Trek the Best Trails in Southwest China

Yunnan is China's premier hiking destination, offering everything from gentle lakeside strolls to challenging high-altitude treks. This guide covers the best trails — the world-famous Tiger Leaping Gorge, the hidden Yubeng valley, the glaciers of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and the ridgelines of Cangshan — with tips on difficulty, timing, and how to join a guided hike.

Why Hike in Yunnan

Yunnan's extraordinary geographic diversity — from subtropical valleys to snow-capped peaks above 5,000m — makes it a hiker's paradise. The province is home to many of China's most iconic trails, set among dramatic gorges, turquoise lakes, rhododendron forests, and terraced rice paddies. The climate is mild year-round at lower elevations, and the Tibetan, Naxi, and Bai cultures add rich context to every trail.

Tiger Leaping Gorge (Best Known)

One of the world's deepest gorges, Tiger Leaping Gorge sits between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain. The classic 2-day hike from Qiaotou to Tina's runs along the high trail with jaw-dropping views of the Jinsha River 3,000m below. Difficulty: moderate. Best time: March-June and September-November. Highlights: 28 Bends, Halfway Guesthouse, and the Middle Tiger Leaping Stone.

Yubeng Valley Trek (Hidden Gem)

The Yubeng Valley trek is Yunnan's most spectacular multi-day hike, leading to a hidden Tibetan village beneath the sacred Meili Snow Mountain. The 2-4 day route (via Xidang or Ninong) passes primeval forests, the Ice Lake, and the Sacred Waterfall. Difficulty: challenging (high altitude, 3,000-4,200m). Best time: May-October (though views are best Nov-Apr, when it can snow).

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Trails

For accessible high-altitude hiking, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain near Lijiang offers the Spruce Meadow (3,200m) and Glacier Park (4,506m) cable-car trails. The Glacier Park cable car is the highest in Asia — the walkway at the top offers surreal glacier views. For a physical challenge, the less-traveled lower trails through pine forests are rewarding. Difficulty: easy-moderate (with altitude). Best time: year-round, clear days preferred.

Cangshan Mountain Trails (Dali)

The Cangshan mountain range, backdrop to Dali and Erhai Lake, offers ridgeline trails with panoramic lake views. The popular route is via the Gantong or Zhonghe cable car, followed by walks along the ridge to viewpoints like the Jade Belt Cloud Road. Difficulty: moderate. Best time: March-June, September-November. Combine with visits to the mountain's waterfalls and temples.

Other Notable Trails

Additional options: (1) The Rice Terrace hikes around Yuanyang; (2) The Old Tea Horse Road sections near Lijiang; (3) The Meili Snow Mountain outer kora for experienced trekkers; (4) The Diancang Ridge traverse; (5) Gentle lakeside walks at Lugu Lake and Pudacuo National Park. For the adventurous, the Three Parallel Rivers area offers expedition-grade treks.

Hiking Tours & Preparation

Most travelers join guided hikes — our tours include experienced local guides, permits, porters (for multi-day treks), accommodation, and meals. Preparation tips: train with regular walks, break in your boots, carry trekking poles for descents, pack for 4-season weather (mountain weather changes fast), carry altitude medication for hikes above 3,000m, and always inform someone of your route. Travel insurance covering trekking is essential.
