Zhangjiajie's towering quartz-sandstone pillars — said to have inspired the floating mountains of 'Avatar' — are one of China's most spectacular sights. But the park's size, crowds, and complex ticketing can be overwhelming. This guide covers everything you need to know to plan a smooth, enjoyable visit.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features over 3,000 sandstone pillars rising up to 200m. The best time to visit is April-May and September-November (clear skies, comfortable temperatures). Summer (Jun-Aug) is warm and can be hazy; winter is cold but offers dramatic mist and occasional snow. Avoid Chinese holidays. A visit to the main park needs 2-3 days; 1-2 more for Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon.
Main park tickets: 225 RMB for 4 days (valid for multiple entries). Tianmen Mountain: 261 RMB (includes cable car). Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge: 141 RMB. Tickets include park shuttle buses but NOT the cable cars (Bailong Elevator and Huangshi Village cable car are extra). Prices rise slightly in peak season. Book in advance online during holidays. A valid passport is required.
1. Yuanjiajie — home of the 'Avatar Hallelujah Mountain' (Southern Sky Column) and the 'First Bridge Under Heaven.' 2. Tianzi Mountain — the grandest views of the pillar forest, reached by the Bailong Elevator (the world's tallest outdoor elevator). 3. Huangshi Village — the classic panoramic viewpoint. 4. Golden Whip Stream — an easy valley walk along a clear stream. 5. Yangjiajie — quieter trails with wild scenery. 6. Tianmen Mountain — with its famous cave and glass skywalk.
Suggested 2-day route: Day 1 — Bailong Elevator up, Tianzi Mountain, Yuanjiajie, walk down or take shuttle to Golden Whip Stream. Day 2 — Huangshi Village (cable car up, hike or cable down) plus the Ten-Mile Gallery. For those short on time, prioritize Yuanjiajie and Golden Whip Stream. The park is huge — use the free shuttle buses between scenic areas. A guide can save hours of wrong turns.
Tianmen Mountain (not in the main park, separate ticket) features the natural Tianmen Cave arch and the thrilling glass skywalk and mountain road of 99 bends. The cable car from downtown Zhangjiajie is among the longest in the world. The Grand Canyon glass bridge (also separate) is a 430m transparent bridge. Both are weather-dependent — check visibility before committing.
Stay options: (1) Wulingyuan town — the main gateway, closest to the park entrance, best for the forest park; (2) Downtown Zhangjiajie — near Tianmen Mountain cable car, more restaurants and nightlife; (3) In-park hotels (e.g., near Yuanjiajie) — for sunrise but basic and book far ahead. Most visitors base in Wulingyuan for the park and do Tianmen on a separate day from downtown.
1. The weather changes fast in the mountains — bring a rain jacket and non-slip shoes. 2. Morning is best for clear views; afternoon often brings haze. 3. The Bailong Elevator queue can be 1-2 hours — arrive at opening time. 4. Pack light — you'll walk a lot. 5. Food inside the park is limited and pricey — carry snacks and water. 6.
