Many of Sichuan's most scenic spots close seasonally — usually in winter, when snow and ice make them unsafe. Here's a guide to which sights close, when, and how to plan around it.
High-altitude sights in Sichuan — mountain parks, glacier areas, and high passes — typically close in winter (roughly December to March) for safety. Roads and trails become impassable.
Sights like parts of Jiuzhai, the high passes of western Sichuan, and some mountain parks close or restrict access in the cold months. Check each before traveling.
The lower sights — the pandas, the Leshan Buddha, Mount Emei's lower sections, and the cities — remain open year-round. Winter travel can focus on these.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best of the high sights without the summer crowds — the ideal window for the scenic spots.
Closure policies change from year to year — some spots now open in winter with improved facilities. Always check the current status before planning.
