About the Show
Peking Opera (Jingju) is China's national opera and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. At Beijing's Liyuan Theatre, you can experience this 200-year-old art form in its most authentic setting, with performers in elaborate costumes and iconic painted faces (lianpu).
The performance combines singing, dialogue, acting, acrobatics and martial arts. Each role type (sheng, dan, jing, chou) has distinctive makeup and costumes. The colorful facial patterns (lianpu) represent the character's personality and fate - red for loyalty, black for integrity, white for cunning.
Liyuan Theatre, located inside the Qianmen Jianguo Hotel, has been showcasing Peking Opera to international visitors since 1990. Arrive early to watch performers apply their makeup backstage - a fascinating glimpse into the preparation behind this exquisite art form.
