Tips for Flight Travel in China

Fly Smart Across China

Plan My Trip →

China's domestic aviation network is vast and efficient, connecting even remote destinations. These tips will help you navigate flight booking, check-in, and airport transfers with confidence during your China tour.

Book Early for the Best Fares

Domestic flight prices in China vary significantly with demand. Book 2-3 months in advance for the best fares, especially during national holidays (Spring Festival, National Day) when tickets sell out quickly and prices spike.

Carry the Right ID

Foreign travelers need their passport to board domestic flights. The name on the ticket must exactly match the passport. Some airlines also accept Permanent Resident Cards. Never board without a valid ID document.

Baggage Allowance

Domestic economy fares typically include 20kg of checked luggage and one 5kg carry-on. Budget airlines (Spring Airlines, etc.) may charge extra for checked bags. Confirm your allowance when booking, and weigh your bags before arriving at the airport.

Arrive Early

Domestic flights close check-in 40-45 minutes before departure. Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours early. During holidays, arrive 3 hours early — security lines can be very long.

Transit Between Airports

Major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu have multiple airports — check which one your flight departs from. Beijing Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX) are far apart; allow ample time and budget for the transfer.

In-Flight Essentials

Flights within China are usually short (1-3 hours). Many airlines offer only a snack or no meal on short routes, so pack snacks and water if you have dietary needs. Download offline entertainment beforehand.

Use Your Tour Operator

If you book through a travel agency, they can manage flight bookings, advise on the best routes, and arrange airport transfers — saving you time and reducing the risk of mistakes with unfamiliar booking platforms.
